Hand-knit sweaters that show up on campus every fall follow patterns passed down and modified for generations. Construction tells you as much about the knitter as the wearer. A cable-knit pullover takes about 60-80 hours to complete depending on gauge and complexity. Structural by design, the cables twist the yarn to create a thicker, warmer fabric than stockinette stitch because the overlapping layers trap more air. Originating in fishing communities in Ireland and Scotland where the density of the knit needed to repel water, specific cable combinations were associated with particular families or villages. Most sweaters I see on campus are made from patterns downloaded from Ravelry, a knitting community site with over 10 million users. Makers have adapted heritage patterns with modern yarn choices and updated fits. Hand-knit sweaters occupy an interesting position because they're simultaneously craft objects and garments. Wearing 1 made by someone you know adds a dimension of care that manufactured clothing does not carry. A friend of mine spent 3 months knitting a sweater for her partner. Wearing it becomes an act of recognizing that labor, a type of social exchange that buying a sweater from a store can't provide.
