At the community garden a seed library runs on a simple system: take what you need, return seeds from your harvest at the end of the season, and the collection grows over time. Seeds are sorted into labeled envelopes in an old card catalog cabinet, organized by plant type and planting season. Each envelope has handwritten notes from previous growers about soil preferences and local growing tips. Last spring I took tomato seeds and the plants produced better than any store-bought seedlings I've used, probably because the seeds had been adapted to the local climate over several growing seasons. No technology or oversight runs this whole system, just a shared understanding that you contribute back what you take.
