A selvage denim cuff tells you everything about how the fabric was made. Selvage means the cloth was woven on a narrow shuttle loom that finishes the edge with a tight band, rather than cutting and overlocking it. The finished edge usually shows up as a thin colored line when you roll the cuff. Most are white with a red or blue thread running through them. You can only see it when the jeans are cuffed up. What started as a construction detail became a style choice. Rolling the cuff is technically optional, but everyone who owns selvage denim does it. Hiding that edge feels like a waste.
