New Balance brought back the 550 after it sat in the archives since the late 1980s. Timing was right because the chunky basketball sneaker shape fits the current trend cycle. Leather is stiffer than what Nike or Adidas use on their retro models, which gives the shoe a more structured look on foot. Colorway options are mostly muted, whites and grays and tans, and that restraint is part of why the shoe reads as mature rather than sporty. What New Balance understood is that people want a sneaker that looks intentional without looking like they tried too hard, and the 550 delivers that. When Aimé Leon Dore collaborated on an early run, the hype created a waitlist, but now you can find the general release pairs for $110 at most retailers. Proportions work with both slim jeans and wider pants, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. I wore mine to a dinner last week and they did not look out of place, which isn't true of most athletic shoes. Fit runs slightly wide and the break-in period is about a week before the leather softens, but after that they are comfortable enough for a full day of walking.
