Editorial: a podcast player on a phone screen showing chapter markers as clickable timestamps, the playback progress bar, and episode artwork visible.

110 words

My podcast app started showing chapter markers within episodes, letting you skip to topics listed in a table of contents rather than scrubbing through 90 minutes of audio. This improvement is as significant as adding a table of contents to a book. Chapter titles appear as clickable timestamps, turning a monolithic episode into a browsable collection of segments. It only works when the producer adds chapter metadata, and most shows have not adopted it, so the improvement is unevenly distributed. Timestamps also make sharing easier because you can reference a chapter by name instead of saying skip to minute 47.
