Personal photo: a pair of thick gray wool hiking socks folded together, the dense knit texture and terry-looped sole visible, resting on a wooden bench near a pair of leather boots.

I put on a pair of thick wool hiking socks in October and don't take them off until April. Merino wool against my feet feels different from cotton in a way that's hard to describe but easy to notice, warmer without being hot, cushioned without being bulky. Still comfortable after 12 hours in boots. Knit pattern on good wool socks has a density that you can feel with your thumb. Terry loop on the sole adds padding exactly where your heel and ball strike the ground.
