#212 of 420Apple AirPods Pro
Editorial: Apple AirPods Pro with the charging case open showing the earbuds nested inside, the white case sitting on a wooden desk next to a laptop, natural light from a window.
AirPods Pro sit in my ears for 5 or 6 hours a day and I have stopped noticing them. Highest compliment I can give a wearable device, because every other earbud I have owned made itself known through pressure, weight, or the sensation of plastic pushing against cartilage. Active noise cancellation is the feature that changed my relationship with public spaces because turning it on in a crowded subway car drops the ambient noise to a muffle and the music or podcast fills the gap. Transparency mode reverses that effect so cleanly that I can have a conversation without removing the buds. Spatial audio tracks your head position and adjusts the sound stage so the source stays fixed in space when you turn your head. While subtle with music, it changes how immersive a film or TV show feels when you are watching on an iPad. The charging case has become part of my daily pocket carry the way keys and a wallet are, the small white pebble smooth enough to fidget with during lectures. Magnetic lid produces a satisfying click that I open and close without thinking. Fit test in the settings app plays a tone and measures the seal in each ear, which is the right way to sell a $250 accessory.
