#197 of 420A24 Film Packaging
Press shot: an A24 special edition Blu-ray with a linen slipcase, the cover art visible alongside an open booklet showing production stills and essays, the A24 logo embossed on the spine.
A24 figured out that the physical release of a film can be an object worth keeping. Their special edition Blu-rays come in custom packaging with slipcases, booklets, and artwork that treat the film like a book rather than a plastic disc in a case. The Moonlight collector's edition has foil stamping on linen paper. Its booklet has production stills and essays. Holding it feels like owning a small piece of the film's cultural moment rather than just a format for watching it. A24's logo before a trailer tells me the movie was selected by people whose taste I trust. That's a powerful position for a distributor to hold. Limited runs sell out quickly. Secondary market prices on some editions hit 3 or 4 times retail, which tells you the packaging has become collectible independent of the content. They should keep making these. Physical media can still compete with streaming if the object itself is worth owning.
