KALLAX from Ikea is a grid of open cubes that functions as a bookshelf, room divider, record storage unit. TV stand depending on how you orient it. The design genius is that the internal dimensions of each cube, 13 by 13 inches, happen to fit vinyl records, fabric storage bins, and standard file boxes without any wasted space. Modularity means a 2x2 unit works as a nightstand and a 4x4 works as a wall of storage. Price range from $40 to $200 covers most of that spectrum. I think KALLAX is interesting because it's one of the most copied furniture designs in the world. Knockoffs from Target and Wayfair are close enough in appearance that the visual language of the cube grid has become generic. But The original has a sturdiness in the particleboard and the edge finishing that the copies usually lack. Open-back design means the wall color shows through. You can add doors, drawers, or fabric inserts to individual cubes to create a mixed storage system that changes as your needs change. Record collector communities in particular have adopted KALLAX as the default storage solution because 1 cube holds about 65 LPs and the weight capacity is sufficient for dense vinyl collections without sagging. DJ booths at house parties and professional recording studios both use KALLAX, which says a lot about how well the proportions work for audio equipment. Ikea doesn't advertise KALLAX specifically for records, but the dimensions suggest someone on the design team owned vinyl.
