Press shot: a Chemex pour-over coffee maker on a white countertop, the hourglass glass body half-filled with brewed coffee, the wooden collar and leather tie visible at the waist.

Chemex pour-over coffee maker has the same hourglass shape it had when Peter Schlumbohm designed it in 1941. Sitting in the permanent collection of MoMA while also resting on my kitchen counter says a lot about a design that works at both scales. Wood collar tied with a leather cord is the handle, and that detail makes the whole thing feel handmade even though it's mass-produced borosilicate glass. I like the ritual of heating water, folding the paper filter into a cone. Pouring in slow circles because it gives me 4 minutes of focused attention before the day starts. Thick proprietary filters produce a cleaner cup than a French press or drip machine, and you can taste the difference in clarity especially with lighter roast beans. I want 1 for my dorm next year because it takes up almost no counter space and makes better coffee than a $200 machine.
