Be My Eyes is an app where blind and low-vision users can video call a sighted volunteer to get help with everyday tasks like reading an expiration date. Identifying a color, or navigating an unfamiliar space. Calls connect in under 30 seconds because the volunteer pool is large enough that someone is always available. Interface is stripped down to a single button for requesting help. Camera feed goes straight to the volunteer's screen so they can describe what they see in real time. I find it fascinating that the app turns a smartphone camera into an accessibility tool without any special hardware, just a human on the other end willing to spend 2 minutes describing a medicine label. Volunteer experience is addictive in a small way because each call feels useful and the tasks are usually simple enough that you can help during a coffee break. AI-powered image description was recently added as a backup when no volunteers are available. Human connection is still the core of the experience because a volunteer can ask clarifying questions and respond to tone in ways that a language model can't yet match.
