#146 of 420Magnetic Snap Closures
Press shot: a close-up of a leather bag flap showing the magnetic snap closure partially open, with the fabric-covered magnetic disc visible on both the flap and the bag body.
Magnetic snap closures on bags and jackets are one of those details you don't notice until you compare them to the alternative. Once you've used a bag with magnetic snaps instead of buckles or zippers, the friction of the old closures feels unnecessary. Each magnet pulls the flap into position from about half an inch away, so you don't have to align anything precisely. A satisfying click when the 2 halves connect gives you tactile confirmation that the bag is closed. I keep noticing these on messenger bags and coat collars where a traditional closure would add bulk or slow down access. Engineering challenge is making the magnet strong enough to stay closed under load but easy enough to pull apart with 1 hand. Best implementations hide the hardware under a fabric-covered disc so you only feel the pull, not the metal. Magnetic closures work especially well on frequently accessed pockets because they eliminate the wear that zippers and snaps accumulate over years of daily use.
