Citibike's app shows a live map of every dock station in the city with real-time counts of available bikes. For a bike-share system, that simple information layer changes everything about whether you actually use it. Knowing there are 8 bikes at the dock 2 blocks away versus 0 at the one downstairs saves the frustration of walking to an empty station. Color coding from green to red makes it readable at a glance. A friend who uses Citibike for her commute said the app is the reason she renewed her membership. That convinced me to download it. The map updates fast enough that you can watch bikes disappear during morning rush, which is weirdly satisfying. It makes the city feel navigable unlike the subway map.
