#283 of 357Burt's Bees Lip Balm + Lush Lip Scrub
Press shot: Burt's Bees beeswax lip balm in its yellow tube next to a small Lush Mint Julips lip scrub pot, both sitting on a bathroom counter with their caps off, showing the waxy balm and the sugar-crystal scrub texture.
Burt's Bees original beeswax lip balm has been in my pocket since middle school. The peppermint tingle when you first put it on is this tiny sensory reset I've come to associate with stepping outside or starting a new task. Like a ritual that lives in a yellow tube. The wax is thick enough to feel like a coating on your lips rather than a film. It doesn't melt in your pocket the way petroleum-based balms do because beeswax has a higher melting point. A chemistry detail I only know because I looked it up after my friend's chapstick ruined the inside of her jacket. Lush makes a lip scrub called Mint Julips that comes in a small pot. The texture is sugar crystals in a flavored base. You rub it on and then lick it off, which is a weird instruction but works because the sugar dissolves and exfoliates at the same time. I use the scrub once a week and the balm every day. The combination keeps my lips from cracking in winter, a problem I've had since I was a kid and moved to a dry climate. The Lush pot smells like a candy store. The Burt's Bees tube smells like a beekeeper's workshop. Together on my nightstand they represent 2 completely different approaches to the same problem, one indulgent and one functional. I like both equally for different reasons.
