I got a pair of wireless earbuds with active noise canceling and the first time I turned them on in the library the silence was so sudden that I actually looked around because I thought everyone had left. That a tiny speaker inside my ear canal can generate an inverse sound wave to cancel out the HVAC hum and the guy sniffling 3 seats away feels like it shouldn't be possible. But It works and I use it every day. A case charges them wirelessly and the battery lasts about 6 hours, enough for a full study session with a little left over. Rubber tips come in 3 sizes and the medium ones seal well enough that even without the noise canceling turned on they block most ambient sound. Tap controls on the outside let me pause music or switch to transparency mode without pulling out my phone. I keep them in my jacket pocket and reach for them the way some people reach for sunglasses, automatically and without thinking about it. The integration into routine is how I know the product works.
