#268 of 357Varsity Letter Jacket
Press shot: Classic varsity letter jacket with a navy wool body and cream leather sleeves, displayed on a hanger against a neutral background, showing the chenille letter patch and snap closure.
Varsity letter jacket has not changed its basic pattern since the 1930s: wool body, leather sleeves, snap front closure, ribbed cuffs and collar, chenille letter patch on the left chest. Proportions work because the contrast between the heavier wool torso and the stiffer leather arms creates a silhouette that broadens the shoulders without adding bulk. Snap closure sits flat instead of bunching the way a zipper does. What I find interesting is how the jacket functions as both clothing and credential. Letter and embroidered patches on the back tell anyone who looks at it exactly where you belong and what you have done. Wearing one on a college campus still carries social weight even in 2022. Ribbing hits at the hip which makes it pair with everything from jeans to a skirt. Color combinations are school-specific so the jacket doubles as a locator, a signal of origin that you can read from across a quad. It is honest as a garment because it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a uniform that you earned the right to wear.
