Bike-share docks near the student center hold 20 bikes in a row and you tap your ID card on the reader and one unlocks with a click that's louder than it needs to be. Almost theatrical, like the system wants you to know it worked. Heavy single-speeds with wide tires, these bikes have front baskets big enough for a backpack. No app to download, no account to create: the whole thing runs through existing student ID infrastructure, meaning the barrier between wanting a bike and having one is about 4 seconds.
