A pegboard storage system in our kitchen uses a grid of holes drilled into a plywood panel with wooden pegs, hooks. Small shelves that slot in wherever you need them, and the flexibility of the arrangement means the storage configuration changes every few weeks as we figure out new combinations that work better. Pegboards have been used in workshops and garages since the 1950s. Recent versions designed for kitchens and home offices use better materials, birch plywood instead of masonite, metal pegs instead of plastic, and the proportions are refined for domestic objects rather than power tools. The grid itself is the design because it imposes no permanent configuration, meaning the system adapts to changes in your needs without requiring new hardware or wall damage. Pegs hold coffee mugs, cooking utensils, small plants. Scissors, and the shelves hold spice jars, olive oil bottles, and a small cutting board. The visible arrangement of everyday objects on a wall creates a kind of functional display that closed cabinets don't offer. Installing it required drilling 4 anchor points into the wall and took about 30 minutes. Panel is large enough, about 3 by 4 feet, to replace an entire section of cabinet storage. I like that the system makes our kitchen tools visible and accessible rather than hidden behind doors. The visibility changes your relationship with the objects, you use things more when you can see them, and the arrangement becomes a reflection of how you actually cook. The cost was about $60 for the panel, pegs, and accessories, which is less than any shelving unit of comparable capacity, and the installation is reversible if we move out.
