Press/product shot: a grid of podcast cover art thumbnails in a podcast app feed, showing a variety of bold typography styles, portrait photos, and illustrated graphics in high-contrast color palettes.

120 words

The podcast cover art that appears in your app feed is a 3,000 by 3,000 pixel square that has to communicate the show's tone, subject. Credibility at the size of a thumbnail, and the design constraints of that format have produced a visual language that's distinct from other media categories. Most successful covers use bold sans-serif type that's readable at 50 pixels wide, a limited color palette of 2 to 3 colors. Either a portrait photo of the host or an illustrated graphic, and the formula works because the thumbnail format rewards high contrast and simplicity over subtlety. Covers that stand out in a feed tend to break 1 convention while following the others, using a script font instead of sans-serif, or a solid color instead of a photo. Between deviation and convention, the tension creates visual interest. I spend more time than I should browsing podcast covers because the format reveals a lot about how designers solve the problem of communicating complex ideas at small scales. The best examples are as effective as any logo design.
