Zocdoc shows you which doctors near you are available today or tomorrow, with real-time openings displayed on a calendar grid. Showing available appointments removes the problem that keeps most people from seeing a doctor, which is that calling offices and being told the next appointment is in 3 weeks feels like a rejection. The interface filters by insurance, specialty, location, and patient ratings, and the booking happens in the app without a phone call. I used it to find a dermatologist last week and had an appointment 2 days later, which would have taken me a month through the traditional call-around process. Patient reviews are written by verified users, and the volume of reviews for popular doctors gives you enough information to judge bedside manner and wait times before you commit. Insurance information is stored in the app and pre-fills intake forms, which saves about 10 minutes of clipboard paperwork at the office. I think the real value is in normalizing doctor visits as something you can schedule as easily as a restaurant reservation. The friction of the phone-based booking system discourages preventive care.
