Uniqlo's HeatTech line is a synthetic base layer that generates warmth from body moisture. The technology works well enough that a thin HeatTech shirt under a regular jacket keeps me comfortable in temperatures where I'd normally need a heavy coat. Fabric is thin and lightweight, layering under anything without adding bulk. The crew neck disappears under a collared shirt, so no one knows you're wearing it. At about $15 per shirt, Uniqlo sells them in 3 warmth levels: regular, extra warm, and ultra warm. That lets you calibrate for the weather rather than guessing. Fit is slim but stretchy. The material has a slight sheen that feels synthetic against the skin but not unpleasantly so. I own 4 of the regular weight in black and rotate them through winter. Washed on cold and hung to dry, they've held up well after about 30 washes without pilling or losing shape. Sizing runs consistent between purchases, which isn't true of every brand at this price point. Uniqlo positions HeatTech as a technology product rather than a fashion item. That's the right framing because the value is entirely functional and the design is intentionally invisible.
