Press/product shot: a glowing pink LED neon sign reading a short phrase mounted on a white wall above a desk, casting a warm glow across the room in low light.

Neon sign kits that let you design a custom phrase and have it made in LED neon tubing have gotten cheap enough that college students are putting them in dorm rooms. The effect is that these glowing text installations have gone from bar decor to personal expression pieces. I want 1 that says something specific to my room rather than a generic phrase. Words rendered in neon carry weight and presence that a poster or a print can't match, because the light itself does something a flat surface can't. The LED versions aren't real neon, they are silicone tubes with LED strips inside. They produce a similar glow and they don't get hot or require the transformer that real gas-filled neon tubes need. A custom sign with 2 or 3 words runs about $80 to $120, and it mounts on the wall with small pins. Warm light changes the atmosphere of a room more than any other single object at that price point. I think that ratio of impact to cost is why they have become so popular.
