Personal photo: A community garden showing individual plots with varying crops and styles, wooden stakes and string trellises visible, a few gardeners working in the background, late afternoon light.

A community garden 2 blocks from my apartment has 40 plots rented by neighbors for $35 per season. What people grow reveals as much about the neighborhood as any census data. 1 plot is entirely herbs planted in neat rows with handwritten stakes, another is a tangle of tomato vines held up by improvised string trellises. Next to the entrance, a plot grows flowers exclusively, marigolds and zinnias that serve no nutritional purpose but make the whole garden feel welcoming.
