#32 of 315Vinyl Record Artwork
Editorial: A vinyl record partially pulled from its sleeve on a wooden shelf, album artwork visible, with a turntable slightly out of focus in the background.
I started collecting vinyl this semester not because the sound is better but because I like holding the album art at 12 inches wide and reading the liner notes while the music plays. A streaming thumbnail is maybe 300 pixels across on my phone screen. A vinyl jacket is a poster you get to keep. The texture of the printed cardboard and the weight of the record inside make the whole package feel like an object rather than a file. My first purchase was a used pressing from a shop near campus. I spent more time looking at the gatefold artwork than listening to the first side. Playing a record also changes how I listen. I have to get up and flip it after 20 minutes, which means I can't just let an album play as background noise indefinitely. Forced engagement makes me pay more attention to the track sequencing. Side A and side B create a natural intermission that the artist originally designed around, and streaming erased that structure entirely.
