Nintendo understood something about how people actually play games that neither Sony nor Microsoft seemed to prioritize. Nintendo made the deliberate decision to optimize for portability and battery life over visual fidelity, and that trade-off is correct for the use cases the Switch is designed for. The kickstand on the back lets you prop it up on an airplane tray table. That small feature defines the product's identity more than any spec sheet because it shows the designers imagined specific moments of use. The interface is minimal, a home screen with game icons and a settings menu. The operating system does not try to be a media center or social network the way other consoles do. Nintendo resisted the industry trend toward always-online, always-connected, always-updating systems and instead built a device that turns on and plays in about 5 seconds. The dock is a simple plastic cradle that charges the Switch and outputs to a TV through HDMI. The transition from handheld to TV mode takes about 2 seconds, and that seamlessness is the product's defining technical achievement.
