#217 of 315Adaptive Reuse Movie Theater
Press shot of a repurposed church interior converted into a cinema, showing the original vaulted ceiling and stained glass windows with a movie screen installed at the front.
A movie theater near campus used to be a church. The conversion kept the original stained glass windows and vaulted ceiling while adding a screen where the altar was. Pews got replaced with modern seats but the proportions of the room still feel sacred, high ceilings, narrow nave. A balcony level gives you the best viewing angle. Acoustic properties of the stone walls actually work well for sound because the hard surfaces create a natural resonance. Seeing a building lose its original purpose and find a new use that respects the architecture instead of demolishing it is exactly the kind of design decision I find worth celebrating.
