#215 of 315Korean Bathhouse Ritual
Press shot of a Korean bathhouse interior showing tiled soaking pools with warm lighting, stone walls, and steam rising from the water surface.
A friend took me to a Korean bathhouse last month, and the experience was so well structured that I keep thinking about going back. You progress through the rooms in a specific sequence: hot pool, cold plunge, steam room, dry sauna. Each transition feels deliberate because your body responds differently at every temperature. The scrub room is the most interesting part. You lie on a heated marble table while someone exfoliates your entire body with a rough mitt. You can actually see the dead skin rolling off, which is gross but also satisfying in a way I didn't expect. Everyone is undressed, and that shared exposure creates a relaxation you can't get alone in your apartment bathroom. Communal vulnerability is the design principle. Simple and clean, the tile work is mostly white with warm lighting. Pools are arranged so you can see other people but aren't forced to interact. Nobody is on their phone. Conversations happen at low volume. Unspoken agreement is part of what makes it feel restorative.
