Personal photo: A row of self-checkout machines at a grocery store with the green bagging area visible.

Self-checkout machines at the grocery store near campus have a bagging area that uses a weight sensor to verify each scanned item. The system is clever because it turns the physical act of bagging groceries into a confirmation step. When weight doesn't match what the scanner expected, the screen turns yellow and a voice says "unexpected item in bagging area." Annoying, but also a feedback loop that teaches you how the machine thinks. The layout puts 6 stations in a cluster with one attendant watching all of them. The ratio of customers to staff is completely different from a traditional checkout line. Most people figure out the rhythm within 3 or 4 visits: scan, place, scan, place. The beep becomes background noise.
