The ceramics category on Etsy has this specific quality where every listing page becomes a window into somebody's studio. Photos tend to be taken on the same wooden table or linen cloth that the potter actually works on. Search results arrange hundreds of mugs and bowls and plates in a grid that looks almost curated even though the algorithm is just sorting by relevance. Scrolling through it feels like walking through a craft fair where every booth is slightly different but connected by the same material constraints of clay and glaze. What keeps me looking is that each maker has a recognizable style even at thumbnail size, a particular way of pulling a handle or applying a slip. It makes the platform feel like a community of people who know each other's work even if they have never met. Some shops have 15,000 sales and the reviews read like letters, people describing how the mug feels in their hand or how the glaze caught the light at breakfast. Searching ceramics on Etsy is better than almost any other category because the product itself is photogenic and every maker is also their own photographer.
