On Running makes shoes with a distinctive sole design that uses individual "cloud" pods rather than a continuous foam midsole. Identifiable from across a room by the cut-out sole pattern, the visual effect is striking. Pods are designed to compress independently on landing and then lock together at toe-off, creating what the company describes as a soft landing and a firm push-off. Sensation underfoot is genuinely different from traditional running shoes. Cushioning feels more responsive than soft, which is a distinction that matters if you run on pavement. On was founded in Switzerland in 2010 and has grown rapidly by positioning itself between the performance running market (Brooks, Asics, New Balance) and the lifestyle sneaker market (Nike, Adidas). Pricing is premium, $130 to $170 for most models, and the design aesthetic is clean and technical without the aggressive branding that dominates the athletic shoe market. Color palettes use muted tones, often grey, white, and olive, that read as understated rather than sporty. I bought a pair of Cloud 5s for walking and light running, and the comfort out of the box was immediate without the break-in period that most running shoes require. Durability has been good over 6 months and about 300 miles, with the cloud pods showing wear but still providing cushioning. Small rocks and gravel get stuck in the sole channels and have to be picked out, which is a design trade-off that the cloud pod geometry creates. The brand has moved aggressively into the fashion-adjacent space, with collaborations and lifestyle-focused models that sacrifice some of the running-specific features for broader appeal. Whether that expansion dilutes the performance credibility remains to be seen, but the core running shoes remain competitive with anything from the established brands at the same price point.
