Sony's PlayStation 5 DualSense controller uses haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to make virtual actions feel physical. The first time you pull a bowstring in a game and feel the tension increase in the trigger as you draw back, you understand why Sony invested in this technology. Haptics go beyond the simple rumble of previous controllers, simulating textures like walking on sand versus walking on metal. Trigger resistance can change dynamically so squeezing a trigger to fire a gun feels different from squeezing it to accelerate a car. The controller itself is larger than the PS4's DualShock 4, with a 2-tone white and black design that matches the console. A built-in speaker and microphone add another sensory layer by playing directional audio and letting you chat with teammates without a headset. Battery life is about 12 hours, which is shorter than the previous generation, and the adaptive triggers drain power faster when they are actively providing resistance. I play about 10 hours per week and the DualSense has changed how I evaluate games. Titles that use the haptics and adaptive triggers well create a physical vocabulary that makes the game feel more present. Astro's Playroom, the pack-in tech demo, remains the best showcase because every surface and every action has a unique tactile signature. Playing it on a DualSense versus a standard controller is the difference between watching rain and feeling it. The trade-off is that the controller costs $70 to replace, which is $10 more than the previous generation. Adaptive triggers have generated reports of stick drift and spring wear that suggest the mechanical complexity may affect long-term durability.
