The band BTS had an entire series of short films, music videos, and a full studio album intertwining their personal narratives with symbolism from Hermann Hesse’s bildungsroman, Demian. The incredible attention to set and costume, and enough mise-en-scene to make a film major cry is to date one of the most masterful concepts I have seen, reappropriating and reinventing a post-WWI story to relate to the concerns of contemporary youth. From a layout perspective, the large hardcover is as theatrical in its pacing and color palette as the series it immortalizes. I value the contexts from which art emerges highly, and this book never fails to inspire me.
