Taza Chocolate, based in Somerville, MA is a chocolate company that produces and sells its own chocolate. Amidst the competition and capitalism embodied by “Big Chocolate” companies and even the smaller producers and sellers, Taza puts a special emphasis on both ethical practices and preserving the traditions of chocolate that originate from the Mesoamerican civilizations who first consumed chocolate in a very different form than we do now. Not only this, but it is also very transparent about all its activities and publishes annual reports (which, even though the public doesn’t really read, serves to hold them accountable to their own ethical goals). Finally, Taza goes a step even further and tries to educate the public about the complexities and food politics behind chocolate supply and production, hosting tours of its facilities.
