Cairo Graffiti Increasing Tourism in Poor Area

by Nourhan Shaaban

Design Point of View: I get inspired by designs that consider the vulnerable and empower users. I love minimalistic designs that rely on neutral colors with some boldness and character. I also love designs that are sustainable, particularly as designs are in harmony with nature, where we use local materials in designs.

How this fits? What I love about this is that it put light into an impoverished area in Cairo and increased interest and attention to this area. It used both Arabic calligraphy and graffiti to give voice to an area that had no voice. It is not just art, but it is a way to protest, and to elevate a voice – especially in Cairo after the Arab Spring.
