Humans of New York is a social media blog (on Instagram and Facebook) that posts pictures of random people the photographer encounters on the street, along with captions that tell each person’s story. As the movement has grown, the photographer, Brandon Stanton, has also traveled to countries facing war or humanitarian crises, and elevated the voices of the people he met there. The social media account amplifies the voices of people who might not otherwise get to tell their stories. It inspires people through elevation; each post shows us that everyone has a story to tell, and every story should be heard. As HoNY has grown in following, it has also inspired similar accounts designed to tell people’s stories in cities around the world – even Harvard has one too!
