Fanny packs have risen to fame and out of unfashionable tourist status due to the boom in streetwear and the youth’s appropriation of once “stale” trends and items and changing them into products that appeal to a younger audience. The fanny pack is a prime example of such- Perhaps the trigger for people buying one is out of convenience, and now it is seen as “fashionable” to wear certain fanny packs cross body. Cialdini’s framework comes into mind: social proof is present… If people see celebrities, and seeming trend setters using a fanny pack and looking cool, the consumer may be motivated to buy one and try and fit that aesthetic ideal.
