After experimenting with building headphones, I’ve now gained an appreciation for the work that goes into 3D design and the protocol behind using power tools. Instead of designing parts in SolidWorks or TinkerCAD, I decided to try something more hands-on. I was drawn to the laser cutter due to its ease of use and its connection with Corel Draw. However, the simplicity of flat design was also the challenge: How could I build a part out of flat pieces? I decided to cut out a dozen crescent shapes and to glue them together, sanding them down until it looked like one cohesive band. To be honest, I’m not sure how well it worked, but I gained experience with the tools and experimented with the software. I’ve come away from this challenge with a newfound gratitude for instruction packets and more empathy for the relaunchers in Challenge 3.
