Near the Pemaquid Point lighthouse in Maine (the famous lighthouse featured on the state quarter for Maine), the water rushes past the rocks quickly enough that they become incredibly smooth. They end up looking as if they are finished by a machine. Some have commented that they look like eggs. Many will stack them like the rocks in the photo below. What’s desirable about these rocks and rock stacks is that they’re interesting: for me, they raise questions like: which is more impressive and powerful, the force of the water smoothing out the rocks, or the talent of the human balancing them?
