I’m not sure of the history of this trend, but it’s something I’ve noticed more and more in recent years – that is, choosing a central image to focalize a collection of album artwork for concurrent or related music releases. Finding a graphic or photograph that is adaptable through recolcration (as seen in the lower image) or one that can be re-interpreted along similar boundaries (as seen in the top image) presents an interesting challenge to design at every phase of the process. The pleasure in these iterations in their ability to reinvent the familiar. by playing against localized tropes, the experience of these designs is not only entertaining, but helps to solidify branding for an easier marketing experience.
