A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) is an important piece of technology for intercontinental missile defense. The THAAD accomplishes four key steps: 1) A radar detects incoming missiles (medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles), 2) the target is identified and engaged, 3) a truck fires the missile interceptor, and 4) using kinetic energy, the interceptor destroys the incoming missile. This incredible piece of technology is transportable, allowing the U.S. to help allies set up their own missile defense system.
