The Sixers announced in May of 2016 that they will be the first team from one of the major four (NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL) sports leagues in the U.S. to sell ad space on their jersey. The deal, reportedly a 3 year, 15 million dollar deal will be a large source of additional revenue. The decision by the NBA to allow advertisement on jerseys is a major one, as there was some worry that it would take away from teams’ iconic jerseys. However, as seen in most European soccer leagues, where brands are represented on all of the football club’s jerseys, it is possible to do this tastefully. I think the stubhub ad on the Sixers jersey is incredibly well done, incorporating the color schemes of the team so as not to stick out.
