For this week’s What I’ve Got, I set out to explore everyday objects that I don’t necessarily buy for their aesthetic desirability, but rather because they’re objects that everybody uses. I wanted to find an object that was simple and ubiquitous, regardless of one’s nation of origin. The color and logo, in combination, make recycling bins unmistakable. The cap is also an easy solution to a somewhat complex problem–make sure that only items that can be recycled are recycled. It’s a “nudge,” borrowing from the language of behavioral psychology. It would be interesting to consider redesigns to the classic recycling bin that improve the rate at which people actually use it appropriately.
