Mount Auburn Cemetery is one of my favourite places in Cambridge. As the oldest rural cemetery in America, it was built in response to two challenges: 1) there were too many people being buried in the city and 2) there was demand for a more beautiful place to pay respects to loved ones who had passed. This well-designed cemetery has inspired the design of public parks and even some suburbs with naturally-curving streets. Frederick Law Olmsted drew inspiration from Mount Auburn Cemetery in his design of Central Park. Both places offer an escape from the chaos and the demands of city life. From the tower in Mount Auburn Cemetery, one sees a Cambridge that carries a different spirit than the one below.
