Next time your scrolling through Netflix, considering checking out their new documentary series called Abstract: The Art of Design. It allows you to peer into the lives of the some of today’s most brilliant and successful design thinkers — eight of them to be exact (illustrator Christoph Niemann, graphic designer Paula Scher, photographer Platon, shoe designer Tinker Hatfield, architect Bjarke Ingels, interior designer Ilse Crawford, car designer Ralph Gilles, stage designer Es Devlin). Beyond presenting some incredibly inspirational work, the show helps us to better understand the trials and tribulations of process. Making something fresh and beautiful is not at all easy — it requires an incredible attention to detail and a high level of responsiveness to the world around us. The number of finished products that we see in the world pales in comparison to the number of discarded pieces. What sets these successful individuals apart is a willingness/hunger/obsession to keep on iterating and producing.
