The Chanel Fall/Winter 2017 Paris fashion show was my inspiration for this week! Chanel’s fashion shows are always an experience (I watch them less for the looks and more for the experience that the brand curates for viewers), but this one stood out to me in particular because it somehow blends fashion, science, technology, and music in a provocative way. The pieces integrate space-themed garments (see rocketship handbag above), and it’s pretty interesting to see the Chanel label on a faux-rocketship. One wonders whether the future of space travel will be sponsored by major brands, in turn for advertising on spacecraft ?. Generally, I’m impressed by Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld’s ability to keep Chanel modern and relevant (even though the actual garments produced by the label are rather traditional) by incorporating the latest trends into its looks and shows. In the past few years, space exploration has been an increasingly trending topic in news and pop culture (i.e. Hidden Figures, Arrival, and the Martian were all nominated for the Oscars in the past two years). As the Chanel rocket blasts off during the show, Elton John’s “Rocket Man” plays in the background. I also really liked this Instagram post that Chanel used to advertise the show, which featured David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.” As a fan of fashion, music, AND space, all of this really appealed to me!
