What I’ve Got: Better Portraits

This is the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX Lens. In camera-speak, 35mm means that the lens has a very short focus (focal length). An f/1.8 refers to an very high aperture — meaning the lens lets in a lot more light than normal lenses. Combine these two features and you can achieve some wonderful depth of field results like the one below. The subject’s face is highly detailed, while the background is blurred and softened. If you own a DSLR definitely consider picking up one of these portrait lenses, as it doesn’t take a professional to achieve stunning results.
