Have thoughts on my design and how I can improve? Let me know. I personally like the easy UI and large fonts, colorful icons and easy to consume information. To improve, I’d think through more diverse graphics, an optimized UX depending on the behavior of kids, and a social network connection. There’s a need for girls to get personalized content to feel empowered, to create a sense of community, and to find news that’s interesting yet educational. Yes, girls should enjoy themselves by learning about sports and fashion, but girls also need a trusted source for things like budgeting and health. This, as I envision, fits on the first and second level of Maslows needs of desirability. Girls, in particular, must learn to be able to survive and get higher on the empowerment cycle. There’s a big problem with how kids consume the news, especially girls. No Indian news platform is designed specifically for girls, and that’s a big problem to me.
I created the storyboard for Newsify for girls between the ages of 9 and 14. Engaging, viral, and educational tools catered to girls is frightfully lacking globally, and this is designed just for them!

When I worked in girls empowerment, for an organization called Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and Dream a Dream, I found that there was no mobile platforms for kids to pick up skills. Girl, even worst, only would get this education in school (meager, at best) or from their family. But if a woman’s mom doesn’t know how to save and budget, how would she pass it on to her daughter?
Virality between girls is something I hope to achieve through this, and I do think that customer engagement will be easier given the first mover advantage. On the other hand, content management, creativity, and a revenue model (kids don’t buy from ads) are going to be a challenge to Newsify. Discoverability would likely increase with more social conversations (Facebook, Whatsapp, etc), and at the local “top-up” stations.
