This is a Chinese Lucky Cat. You’ve probably seen them in the front of restaurants or stores in Chinatown. My parents bought me one on my second trip back to China. I thought it was really ugly for long time and didn’t take it out of the box for years. I still think it’s rather ugly, but I’ve grown fond of it and always have it on my desk. I think the thing that makes this desirable is its cultural history. It always stands out There are more “classy” looking cats that are white or made of glass, but most places still prefer this shiny, gold type. For some reason, the unrefined look of the lucky cat is actually a benefit.
