Start-Move was inspired by the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders [MSD] among office workers. MSDs affect the muscles, nerves, and tendons of the neck, upper extremities, and lower back and result from the strain of repetitive motion associated with office work. Studies have shown that MSDs decrease work performance and increase health expenses. One of the easiest, yet most effective ways to reducing the occurrence of MSDs is engage in stretching and strengthening exercises throughout the day in order to break up repetitive motion. However, office workers usually don’t take sufficient breaks for stretching/strengthening because they only tend to stop working when they feel actual discomfort. Start-Move was developed as a wearable reminder to engage in activities that break up repetitive motion, in order to reduce the chance of MSDs and to generally improve the health and productivity of our wearers.
Our prototype line features a well-design women’s cardigan, fitted with Start-Moves reminder technology. Each cardigan has one accelerometer, which is programmed to be sensitive to a lack of range of motion. There are vibrating motors positioned at the back of the neck, the shoulders, the arms, and wrists. Vibrating reminders, which are triggered after a certain threshold is detected by the accelerometer, in a particular location indicate to the wearer which area should be stretched. The vibrations synch with a mobile app that offers exercise suggestions/diagrams designed to target the area corresponding with the particular vibrating reminder. The app offers positive reinforcement and it’s language is neither chastising nor patronizing. The technology is powered by a removable battery.
Earlier models of our cardigan may not feature an accelerometer, and will instead have reminders that are programmed to go off at a certain interval. These intervals would be set using the Start-Move app.
