The way this magazine was displayed at Whole Foods, the top picture looked like a bird sipping water out of the page, but then I literally took a step back to see the (now obvious) human face. I’m not sure whether the designer intended for this exact effect, but even on its own this magazine cover effectively conveys the cover story of the magazine: earth day, and our relationship with the planet. This design is desirable because it takes an exotic human face and interplays it with the content of the magazine in a compelling way. It also makes great use of color, emphasizing the green of the coasts, the yellow of the American great plains and southwest, the red of the model’s lips, and of course the blue that acts as a base for the design. The colors of the fonts also are especially effective: with only green and white, the designer effectively accomplishes the main information goals of the piece.
